چکیده
BACKGROUND Anaplastic thyroid cancer has a median survival between 1.2 and 10 months. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer in Ireland. METHODS We carried out a retrospective analysis of the Irish National Cancer Database for patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer between 2000 and 2010. RESULTS Of a total of 64 patients (40 women, 24 men), the median age was 69 years, and 29.7% of the patients had distant metastases. The overall median survival was 2.3 months and the 1, 2, and 5-year survival was 12.5%, 6.25%, and 4.69%, respectively. On univariate analysis age, sex, metastases at diagnosis, and multimodality treatment were statistically significant indicators of prognosis, and metastases at diagnosis remained statistically significant on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION These results correlate with the American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines, in which, when possible, multimodality therapy offers a survival advantage to a select group of patients. Novel therapies may offer the greatest hope for these patients. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: E1122-E1129, 2016.

Developmental trends in targeted radionuclide therapy of neuroendocrine tumors
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including carcinoids, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, pituitary tumors, medullary thyroid carcinoma and phaeochromocytomas. The symptoms and the outcome of NETs differ considerably between patients depending on several factors. By labelling tracers with a radioisotope, the tracer acts as a ...
متن کاملALK Rearrangement in Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma: A Discovery Towards a Personalized Approach?
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) represents about 1% of all thyroid carcinomas [1]. ATC is the most aggressive form of thyroid carcinoma especially when metastatic accounting for 14-50% of all thyroid cancer related deaths [2]. Prognosis and outcomes following local progression or metastasis are poor using conventional therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, and external beam radiation thera...
متن کاملNGS based identification of mutational hotspots for targeted therapy in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma
CONTEXT Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) represents one of the most aggressive carcinomas with no consistent survival benefit when treated with conventional radiochemotherapy. Approaches targeting "oncogene addiction" of ATC are increasingly explored and first promising results have been reported in single case studies. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of mutations in known thyroid onc...
متن کامل18F-FDG PET/CT in the diagnosis of tumor thrombus from anaplastic thyroid carcinoma in a young boy
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is an uncommon, highly aggressive malignancy usually presenting in the elderly. An eighteen year old boy was recently diagnosed as anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid. PET/CECT scan performed for staging, revealed a large FDG avid heterogeneously enhancing thyroid mass with bilateral jugular venous thrombosis, which also showed increase...

Background & Aim: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is an uncommon malignancy of the thyroid .with poor prognosis and 2 to 6 month of survival time. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of curcumin on bioavailability and expression of p21 and Bcl-2 genes in human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell line (SW-1736). Methods: In this study, human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (SW-1736) c...
